National Fishing Week 2006
19th - 28th August 2006
‘The biggest event in the angling calendar’
For those of the Angling world who are still in the ‘dark’ regarding National Fishing Week, then continue to read on and all will be revealed!
National Fishing Week (NFW) is the one event in the year that encourages the ‘non-fishing’ fraternity to try the sport for the very first time with the intension that many who try will return to the waters in great numbers.
It is the one-week in the calendar year when all aspects of the angling industry unite with the sole purpose of increasing participation levels. All corners of society are encouraged to take part and experience the sport for the first time. We encourage the young, the disabled, women who may not have considered fishing before to name but a few.
NFW benefits from the support of its Sponsors, namely: The Royal Bank of Scotland, The Environment Agency, Sportsmatch and the Angling Trades Association. NFW has its own designated website, courtesy of support received through the Dreamstore charity.
The 2005 festival was concluded on the 29th August and was heralded a huge success. Over 300 locally organised events were staged across the length and breadth of the UK and statistics show that more than 7000 newcomers participated.
Events such as ‘Dad’s & lads’, ‘Catch it and Cook’, and ‘Get into Angling’ were some of the names thought up by the organisers to entice their audience.
Angling club’s, Association’s and syndicates all opened their doors during the week to help convert the doubters. Volunteers from the Coarse, Game, and Sea fishing sectors of the industry took part along with qualified licensed angling coaches to help in making it a memorable year. To add to the newcomer’s enjoyment, goody bags, donated by the industry, were distributed as a memento of their first day’s fishing.
With so much going on, NFW was able to promote its sport to the outside world through a variety of different media vehicles. National, regional and local radio covered over 7 hours of NFW events. TV camera crews were present at many event locations to broadcast positive angling footage for the viewers. The regional press were heavily involved in promoting what makes fishing the United Kingdom’s favourite participated pastime. All this media attention surrounding the festival delivered combined viewing and listening figures in excess of 15 million.
The NFW bandwagon is now on a roll for 2006. The dates for the festival will be 19th-28th August. We aim to surpass our 2005 statistics with the help of those much-needed volunteers. Our aim is to deliver more events than last year and encourage greater participation from the general public.
These goals can only be achieved through the hard work of the volunteers, coaches and event organisers. So maybe this is where you readers come in.
