Fish Cottage is the ideal place for anyone seeking fly fishing on a variety of streams and rivers in beautiful countryside, while enjoying the comfort of an authentic Devon cottage – with Wi-Fi!

Fishing can be arranged on several local rivers. Thursday fishing is available on one of the best beats of the middle Taw for up to 2 rods, free of charge to house guests.

One of a group of former estate cottages built for workers at the Earl of Portsmouth's estate at Eggesford and surrounded by woodland, Fish Cottage retains its original charm and character. Special features are: sitting room with wood-burner stove and slate floor, cosy study with open fire, bright and airy garden dining room with table for 6 (ideal place to tie your flies), two double bedrooms overlooking the extensive private garden, Victorian bath and shower, and fully equipped kitchen with modern amenities.

There are numerous great pubs and restaurants nearby including the "War Horse" pub, Duke of York near the river Torridge, and Fox and Hounds, on the river Taw. Situated in the beautiful countryside of the two rivers featured in Henry Williamson’s famous book, Tarka the Otter,  Fish Cottage is the perfect place from which to explore “Tarka Country” – with woodland walks, horse riding, cycling and the Tarka Line railway all within close reach.

"I'm torn between saying how great this was, and wanting to keep it a secret! The cottage is elegantly furnished in every detail, and its fantastic sense of style and personality makes it feel a real privilege to stay - without taking away from its natural warmth and cosiness, if that makes sense. Just an incredibly relaxing, characterful place to spend some time. Hugely recommended for some peace and quiet, or as a base for exploring the countryside (still picturesque even in late, late autumn). Followed by a cup of tea or a glass of wine in the firelit study - perfect. When our travel plans changed, Michael's very kind and accommodating approach came to the rescue, and that really helped us to enjoy our trip; housekeeper Fiona was also really friendly and ready to help, and was at the end of a phone when we needed her. Can't wait to go back and see the place in summer."

"Michael was very courteous, helpful and very welcoming, very sympathetic.  He patiently answered all our questions, especially about arranging fly fishing for our two son's.  We were warmly greeted with flowers, wine, cookies and a cozy lit Cottage receive and we were immediately felt as if we were in the house of a friend. The cottage is charming and a little gem, lovingly furnished with antiques and personal items, very comfortable and well maintained. Michael and Julie have created a beautiful ornamental and kitchen gardens, with herbs, potatoes and apples. The surrounding landscape is beautiful, green and fertile and the weather just English - I have incredibly beautiful cloud formations, light and colors seen in nature. And silence."

"Fabulous place, idyllic bolt hole, situated in lovely countryside. The fishing was superb and a great way to spend the day. Mark got a good few catches (me not so as total novice). He was really chuffed with the last catch of a fine wild Brown Trout. Michael was extremely helpful prior arrival and Lenice was the perfect host whilst there - a bottle of wine on chill was the perfect start to a break away. Great attention to detail. We'll be back! Thank you both."

"Probably my favourite Airbnb experience so far. Fish Cottage is a beautiful hideaway in a beautiful spot. The interior is a glorious collection of furniture, books, lamps, rugs and pictures. The secluded and very long garden is a perfect exterior space for lounging around, listening to birds and catching some sun. Beyond that, the mid - Devon countryside offers woodland walks, easy contact with beaches (we went to Instow), and pretty towns and villages.  I think that within 15 minutes we felt at home, and after that it was just fun to explore. We would definitely return, possibly next year!"

"Hi Michael, I had a great day on the river yesterday - what a cracking stretch of river."
